Another neat fangame in the making. Got to talk with the creators of this one too, what they have planned sounds really interesting! Everyone should go take a look. :33

Ahhh thank you so much!! If any of you haven’t checked out The Looking Glass yet, you really should! It’s one of my personal favourite fangames.

roomnumber203 Asked: Ooh, fan game! *followed* I'm a huge fan of them, and I'm curious what the process of creating a fan game is like. I know there's a lot of work with the art and the music and whatnot, but what else is there to it? I'm aware you're still in that process, but rattling off stuff that you have to work on still is helpful, I think. +3+

Answer:

Other than art and music (art worked on by the three of us since we all draw as a hobby; music is handled by Josh), there’s also the programming to take into consideration! With our fangame we’re working with RPG Maker 2003 (though I’ve seen other fangames use VX and other versions), and honestly it feels like we spend a lot of time working against the program rather than with it. (Especially since these games aren’t the RPGs the program has in mind.)

Even working with the graphics was difficult at first — we had to figure out chipsets (used for tiles and objects) and charsets (used for characters/NPCs/moving objects) to even get things appearing in the program properly, and if you’ve never worked with them before they can be pretty intimidating!

Past that, there’s the actual programming — getting events to work, coding the effects and all the other things the game needs to function like we want it to. I did programming for a few years and I’m going into game programming, so I have some experience with it already but I think anyone can pick it up! RPG Maker 2003 is incredibly simple.

Other than that… we just started talking one day about: “What if we could make our own fangame?” And after talking with the creator of The Looking Glass (a game you should really play!), we got encouraged to try it out! After that point it was just coming up with a character, a theme, how would we handle the nexus and worlds, etc. It just branched out from there really naturally.

So if you’re at all interested: try it out! And you can always contact one of us for help, too. I might put up a section for contact info to make that a little easier.

Here’s a little track we’ve made for the game! If you happen to recognize the melody, then congrats- you get a sneak peek into one of the worlds we’re working on.

Finished revamping the basement! The revamped Forest world is the next post we’ll make.

Hey guys! I know we haven’t posted in awhile but I swear we’re alive. Finished replacing graphics on the first floor of the house — we just need to fix up the basement and then we can go back to working on our worlds. (Which, oddly enough, should probably take less time since this is fairly tedious.)

Been a bit preoccupied with the holidays, but we have some progress we’ve made! Have some before and after shots of the second floor as we continue replacing graphics. May end up tweaking Charlie’s sprite a bit too since that was before we realized that hey, we can deviate from web colors.
